NOTICE:  HONOR GUARD FUNERALS ARE NOW BEING PERFORMED ON LIMITED BASIS.

WE ARE PLEASED TO PROVIDE GRAVE-SIDE HONORS FOR THOSE VETERANS HAVING PASSED DURING COVID-19.

Over twenty-five years ago, veterans of Marple Newtown saw a need for an Honor Guard to honor deceased veterans in order to ensure a proper military burial.  Three local veterans groups joined forces and became known as the “Marple Newtown Combined Veterans Alliance.”  This group is certified by the Department of Defense (DOD) to perform graveside ceremonies and they currently consist of these organizations:
  • Marple Memorial Post #805 of the American Legion in Broomall, PA
  • The General Smedley D. Butler Detachment #741 of the Marine Corps League in Newtown Square, PA
The complete service requires ten veterans as follows:

Seven Riflemen who will fire 3 volleys while supervised the Honor Guard Commander.

  • Four Color Guards
  • Two Flag Folders
  • One presents the Flag & Presidential Memorial Certificate Request Form
  • One Bugler who will play "taps" or sometimes referred to as "Butterfield's Lullaby" after the 3 volleys have been fired
  • One to recite “In Flanders Fields” and place a poppy on the casket

After the friends and family place their flowers, the Honor Guard provides the "Last Salute" with Present Arms, Order Arms, and Dismissed.  This service is voluntary and the Alliance has provided Honor Guard services in Delawre County for as many as 300 veterans in a year.  A full staffing is not always available and we will perform our fellow comrade's service with honor using available volunteers.  The services, by request to the Funeral Director, may be supplemented with 2 active duty soldiers or officers (depending upon deceased's last rank attained) for flag folding and presentation.  All coordination is to be done between the loved ones and the Funeral Director who will coordinate with our Alliance Funeral Services' Officer-in-Charge.

If you have an exceptional situation, you may contact the Alliance Funeral Services' Officer-in-Charge:
